Night of Song at MelBee's in Kansas. What a trip it is to go there. A real piano for one thing, that's always good! Plus some really good people showing up to listen.
Night of Song is not only about the Music, but the Ballyhoo! The Ballyhoo this night was me and former business partner, Kim having to work side by side. she working at the restaurant and me producing the show... You know, it's opera. Drama out of nothing.
Everybody was taken care of and the eve was sublime. Though, we start NOS at 6pm most times at the restaurants. It's daytime during most of our performances, so it's kind of like a Day of Song. But where's the chiaroscuro in that.
But the singing was exemplary, Sylvia providing a keen moment singing Porgi Amor at the bar...alone. truly a special moment for Night of Song. Elaine was a champion Habenera, really kicking it among other things. We had tried to get this duet from King and I going for months and finally pulled it off. We were both going like, what is this middle section??? But it was truly fun. Stephanie Laws was the other sop. She was brilliant. I truly think she has potential, if it were up to me, she would have been cast in a few more shows at UMKC Cons, and now she sits atop Bentons singing Jazz with Sylvia's Hubby Wayne Hawkins. It's a decent trade off, you know to play with one of the nations top talents.
Laurie, star of 106.5 The Wolf showed her pretty head up!!! If you didn't know about NOS, Don't worry, even my wife doesn't know what I'm doing half the time...totally my fault. I see steady improvement in this regard, but in tiny, tiny steps. But there she was and she sang well too. We got to do The Prayer, which Carl said was 'better than ever', (sic) and then she sang a great standard, and though at them moment I can't remember what it was, it was very sexy and good. Not just saying that, dear, it really was. Go! Fight! Win!
I had forgotten, from working restaurants for 20 years or so - to partially put my butt through college (or to keep the beer flowing), the smell of the first dish being presented. It was fresh and clean, with that scorched butter/olive oil smell... Lloyd, as usual was ever the gentleman.
"They didn't even look at another. Anybody who likes scandale would love THAT!..." overheard
