Beatles Remastering Complete... But Where's Digital?

A totally remastered Beatles catalog will see the light of day on September 9th, according to announcements issued Tuesday morning. But the pristine remasterings are only being packaged into CDs, and a digital release strategy remains missing.

The details were outlined by Beatles business entity Apple Corps., as well as label EMI Music. Each of the CDs will be packaged with replicated original album art, as it first appeared in Britain. The titles will also include expanded booklets containing original and newly-written liner notes and rare photos.

During the initial sales period, each CD will also be embedded with a brief documentary film about the album. A pair of new Beatles boxed CD collections are also being released, according to the groups.

So why not position those newly-remastered songs on iTunes, or some other digital sales outlet? That is now a decade-long question, enough to fossilize this group among a newer generation. Then again, the entire digital catalog has been available across free channels, leaving many fans without viable, paid options. "Discussions regarding the digital distribution of the catalog will continue," the groups offered in an official statement. "There is no further information available at this time."
